The Veins of Time

The Veins of Time

2024

My artistic practice emerges at the intersection of history, politics, and the socio-political realities of our time—issues we encounter, in varying degrees, across the world through the influence of systems and structures of power. In my work, I use bandages as the primary material across all my artworks. A sensitivity to past events and their impact on contemporary challenges shapes the trajectory of each piece.

These bandages symbolize historical wounds and enduring suffering; their texture and tactile presence evoke the human experience of events that leave marks on our memory and our bodies. Black bandages recall the devastation born of tyranny, death, mourning, and the concealed truths within the darker chapters of history and power struggles—what ultimately befalls human lives. Red bandages represent the violence, killing, and bloodshed that continue to unfold across the world. Together, black and red form an abstracted distillation of the history and politics that define our contemporary moment.

The bandages serve as tangible evidence of the deep scars left by conflicts, wars, and injustices—traces that weigh not only on history but on the present condition of the world. Thread, needles, and the act of stitching—akin to suturing—introduce a dimension of reflection and potential healing, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action against injustice.

In some of my works, mirrors confront viewers with their own role in shaping the outcomes of political events—often destructive and catastrophic—asking whether their actions, or inaction, will stand on the right side of history. Dog tags serve as further symbols of self-reflection, identity, and individual responsibility. Though commonly associated with soldiers, in today’s world they take on a broader meaning, becoming emblems of the preservation of identity for all human beings.
